We Have Not Smuggled In Any New Tariff ECG

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has denied removing the governments subsidy on electricity tariff, saying it has not been authorized to do so by the Public Regulatory Commission (PURC), the regulator of power and water tariffs in the country. Below is a rejoinder from the ECG to the Monday, July 22, 2013 edition of The Chronicles story headlined: ECG smuggles in new tariff. RE: ECG Smuggles In New Tariff The management of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has noted with concern the above headline in your Monday, July 22, 2013 edition of The Chronicle. The company wishes to state emphatically that it has not been authorized by the mandated regulator, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission, or the government to remove subsidy component in the tariff presently being implemented by the ECG. It is a fact that the electricity providers, including VRA, GRIDCo and ECG have submitted tariff proposal to PURC and are still in consultation with stakeholders. However, we have not been authorized by PURC who regulates the industry by law to alter the existing tariff regime. In order to clear the doubting minds, ECG welcomes any independent investigative body to check the authenticity of our claim. We wish to take opportunity to assure our cherished customers that our values including transparency, integrity and trustworthiness will never be compromised.
