Kwami Sefa Kayi Kicks Against Re-Naming Hockey Pitch It Is Not Fair

Commemorating the one year anniversary of late Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, former President of the Republic of Ghana, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has decided to honour his memory by re-naming the National Hockey Pitch after him. The Hockey Pitch which had already been named is now going to be known as John Evans Atta Mills Hockey Stadium. Mr Alfred Oko Vanderpujie, made this known at a special assembly meeting held on Tuesday. The Accra Mayor indicated that the decision was to honour his (Mills') achievements in hockey, particularly for ensuring the construction of the modern stadium just months after assuming power in 2009. However, renowned broadcaster and one of the most influential radio personalities in Ghana, Kwami Sefa-Kayi, has strongly disagreed with this decision, saying: it is not fair. He opined that the original name given to the Hockey Pitch should be maintained in honour of one of the virtuous daughters of this country. The national hockey pitch formerly known as "Theodosia Okoh hockey pitch" was named after Madam Theodosia Okoh, the designer of Ghanas National Flag. Madam Theodosia Okoh was a former chairperson of the Ghana Hockey Association, a position, which she held for several years and played a great role in the improvement of the sport. Protesting the change of name, Kwami Sefa-Kayi, also host of Peace FMs Premium Morning Show Kokrokoo stated: Let me state here that my fight continues, if I will win, I dont know; but Madam Theodosia Okoh gave us our national flag. She played hockey, she chaired the National Hockey Association. Dont change the name; I beg. It is not fair. She is alive and very well and it is just not fair to do this at all. We should not change the name. Madam Theodosia Okoh Hockey Pitch should be maintained.
