HERNIA: 22-Year-Old Boy Commits Suicide

A 22-year-old man last Thursday threw the village of Oboadakaa, a suburb of the Suhum Municipality of the Easter Region, into mourning when he was discovered hanging from the end of a cloth in his fathers room dead. Kwame Tabi reportedly locked himself up in his fathers room at midnight and committed suicide. Kwame was known to have been suffering from hernia for the past eight years, a condition that has caused his stomach to bloat uncontrollably. It is, however, not clear if his suicide had anything to do with his health condition. The father, Francis Mawuli, told the 'Daily Democrat' that his son, prior to his death was not known to have been suffering from insanity or spiritual attacks. According to him, he left for Accra the day before the incident and returned at night only to found out that the door to his room was locked with no Kwame insight. Mr. Mawuli revealed that when he realized it was getting late he used a pickaxe to break down door only to discover Kwame hanging from the end of the cloth. I cried to neigbours for help and subsequently reported the incident to the Suhum Police, he said. The mother of the deceased, Awo Yaa, narrated that Kwame attended school at the Suhum Newtown JHS but did not complete because he was constantly ridiculed about the hernia and his bloated stomach. Kwame, she said, therefore stopped the schooling and took to driving instead to make a living. According to her, the day before the incident, he visited her and the two ate and talked over trivial matters. The corpse has since been deposited at the Suhum Government Hospital for autopsy while the police continue with their investigation.
