The Police hierarchy, as part of its advocacy for peace and maintenance of law and orders, has called on the National House of Chiefs to support the service to maintain peace in the country as Ghanaians await the Supreme Court verdict.
Addressing members of the house, representatives of some chiefs and the Minister of Chieftaincy Affairs yesterday, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Ahmed Alhassan stressed that even though the police are prepared to deal with any security threat after the Supreme Court ruling, there is the need for stakeholders to come together to prevent any skirmishes.
�Policing today is a shared responsibility and since the police recognize the role played by traditional leaders in maintaining peace, law and order in their communities, there is the need for us to fall on you to fight one cause.�
Mr. Alhassan noted that the police administration was aware of the influence of traditional rulers in the country.
He appealed to chiefs to partner the police to carry out the constitutional mandate.
Touching on the crime situation in the country, the IGP said crime has reduced considerably.
�Citizens are now able to go about their duties without fear of crime.
On market fires, Mr. Alhassan said the police, together with other sister agencies, are patrolling the various markets 24 hours to deter perpetrators.
He noted that a committee comprising representatives from the Ghana Police Service, Bureau for National Investigations (BNI) and the Ghana National Fire Service(GNFS), are working together to find out the root cause of market fires.
The President of the National House of Chief�s Naa Professor John S. Nabila promised to deliver the IGP�s message to all chiefs who were absent.
The police cannot promote peace if they do not involve the traditional rulers, he said.
The Minister of Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr. Henry Seidu Daanaa said teamwork between the police and stakeholders would yield positive results.
�Police are always there to keep peace so let us work towards peacefully co-existence for peace in the country.�
