The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) on Monday joined the rest of the world to celebrate World Humanitarian Day which is celebrated on August 19 every year. The day designated by the United Nations is to celebrate Humanity and recognized the sacrifices and contributions of humanitarian personnel and those who risk their lives to offer help and hope to others. A statement issued in Accra by Mr Kofi Portuphy, National Co-ordinator of NADMO, said the commemoration of the day "is aimed at keeping the humanitarian torch burning and ensure that the tragic loss of lives of humanitarian personnel in relieving people suffering from disaster was not in vain.� The statement said relief workers for whatever the emergency, from earthquake to conflict, flood to pandemic infection had to leave the comfort of their homes to help others in need. The statement said the goal of this year�s celebration was to build on last year�s momentum with a global movement that also generated funding for humanitarian aid with the conviction that the world needed more of everything one could think of in making life comfortable for humanity. Mr Portuphy appealed to companies and individuals to support NADMO with material and logistical assistance to enable the organisation respond to humanitarian crises including natural and man-made disaster. He said the primary objective of humanitarian aid was to save lives, alleviate suffering and maintain human dignity adding that �NADMO needs more aid to do that". �As we remember those who have lost their lives in the course of helping others, let us make positive and lasting impressions on the lives of the vulnerable, they need us� he added.
