Anti-Corruption Demo To Hit Accra

The Progressive Peoples Party (PPP) led-anti-corruption coalition, has announced the official launch of its campaign against corruption in the country. In a statement issued yesterday in Accra and signed by the Coalitions convener, William Dowokpor, it said the demonstration will come off on Tuesday, September 10, 2013. The anti-corruption campaign, according to the Coalition, first is a series of demonstration in support of reforms in Ghanas governance system. According to the Coalition, the demonstration will begin at Obra Spot, Kwame Nkrumah Avenue, at 7:30 a.m. with participants marching through Kwame Nkrumah Circle to Kntamanto, through to Makola, to the Central Past Office on High Street, and converge at the Old Polo Grounds for the launch. It added that the Coalition has fourfold demands for reforms. These, the statement stressed, include turning the office of Attorney-General into an Independent Prosecutors Office separate from the Ministry of Justice and separating the Legislature from the Executive (Presidency). The rest are removal of the hand of the Executive (Presidency) from the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies, and establishing a Ministry of Public Service to continuously seek improvement in the way work is done and take step to strengthen public institutions in Ghana. The coalition remains open to all public spirited individuals and organizations that wish to help stop corruption and wastage; estimated to cost the Ghanaian public sector alone, some GH₵3 billion annually, the statements concluded. Earlier, a member of the Communication Team of the PPP, Kit Yawson, underscored the need for the party to extend its anti-corruption demonstration nationwide. Sharing his thought with "Today", he said Our Anti-Corruption Demonstration would be extended to all other 9 regional capitals after the first one in Greater Accra on Tuesday September 10, 2013 in order to gather the required momentum. According to him, that way our Progressive message shall be felt nationwide. Anything worth doing must be done very well. I am calling on all Progressives to back this call which I believe shall help boost our image and membership drive so when the time of reckoning comes we shall stand a very good chance to vie equally with the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party.
