New Transport Fares Causes Confusion

A unilateral decision by drivers to increase transport fares caused a great deal of confusion between drivers and commuters on Thursday. Some drivers in the capital increased their fares by twenty percent. According to the drivers, the increase-a directive from GPRTU was based on the previous substantive increment in fuel prices. Even though the GPRTU has denied knowledge of such a directive, some of the drivers who spoke to Citi News said the GPRTU is in the know. Speaking to Citi News, the Chairman of the Circle-Teshie Nungua branch of GPRTU, Samuel Boadu said the GPRTU had held several meetings with the Regional Secretariat in Accra adding that they were taking a lot of issues into consideration. He observed that although drivers dont appreciate the prices that has been given by the GPRTU, they have to accept it since the GPRTU are their directors Explaining the rationale behind the increment in Transport Fares, The Vice Chairman of the Circle Branch of the Progressive Transport Owners Association of Ghana, Daniel Ocloo said the problem could not be controlled since the directive to increase transport fares was from the GPRTU.
