2013 National Best Teacher Award Scheme Launched

The 19th edition of the National Best Teacher Award has been launched in Accra and it will be on the theme: A call for teachers: Teachers take the lead for quality education. Speaking at the launch Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Minister of Education, said the role and importance of teachers in education delivery was cherished by government, hence the introduction of the award scheme in 1995. She said both governments and sponsors have contributed a lot to motivate teachers since the inception of the award scheme and the public deserved better from teachers than threats of strikes as first option of expressing dissatisfaction. Prof Opoku-Agyemang said quality of education would be greatly enhanced if teachers used the resources available to them, including instruction time and better appreciation of the national recognition of their role as evidenced by the award scheme. She said this years award would be held on 5th October at Wa and 55 teachers would be awarded at the national level, 360 at the regional level and 3,312 at the district level. Mr Stephen Adu, Deputy Director General at the Ghana Education Service, commended successive governments for maintaining the award scheme; assuring that the service would continue to explore more avenues to enhance quality of teaching.
