CPP's Criticism of Minority In Parliament Is Worrying

Anthony Karbo believes the criticism of the Minority in Parliament on its analysis of the economy by the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) is in bad taste. According the former Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party, one would have thought that the duty of a responsible opposition is to put the government on its toes, but for the CPP to renege on this duty and also chastise the NPP for pointing out the mistakes of the government, is worrying. We heard the last time the NPP minority spoke, that, our analysis does not make sense. CPP, we are in opposition with you. I dont see how you would be able to tell that our player is not good if we are both sitting on the bench, he stated. Anthony Karbo further questioned the outcome of such a posturing by another opposition party. We are in opposition with you so what would be the effect of your accusation. It is like PNC attacking NPP, PNC attacking CPP and NPP attacking PNC, then we allow the government to go free, the NPP former Youth leader bemoaned on Adom Fm. However, Anthony Karbo advised that our (the oppositions) attention, as a responsible opposition should be directed towards the government, they control state power, the resources of the state and expand these resources. These comments come after the CPP disapproved of assessment of the economy made by the Minority in Parliament. In a press conference addressed by Dr. Akoto Osei, a former Finance Minister in the erstwhile Kufour Administration and a Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, from a total public debt of GH9.5 billion in January 2009, Ghanas public debt stands at GH43.9 billion (49.5% of GDP) as at the end of August 2013. According to him, between December 2012 and August 2013 (that is within the last 8 months), government added GH8.8 billion to our public debt. This means, we are borrowing at a rate of GH1.1 billion per month. This is not just unsustainable, it is also unreasonable! With this huge appetite for borrowing from the domestic market, it is grossly incompetent and disingenuous for government to blame banks for high lending rates to businesses and individuals, the Minority said.
