Govt Must Enact Foreign Corrupt Practices Act

Alliance For Accountable Governance (AFAG) has urged the government to seriously consider enacting a Foreign Corrupt Practices Act to govern the conduct of Ghanaian businesses globally. According to a statement issued in Accra and signed by five AFAG members, over the years AFAG had urged the government to support indigenous businesses in their quest to expand into the international market. The statement was signed by Messrs Davis Opoku Ansah, Bright Acheampong, Williams Agyei, Murtala Mohammed and Faisal Ibrahim. The statement said the World Bank Groups announcement debarring Ghanas Zoomlion for two years because of its misconduct of bribing government officials in order to secure a contract was shocking to them. According to the statement, this has embarrassed Ghana and was a huge stumbling block to other Ghanaian businesses in the international arena and said that was a black spot on the image of corporate Ghana. The statement questioned how the World Bank Group and other international banks would view bids from Ghanaian businesses and called on the government to investigate the matter in order to protect the corporate Ghana brand. The statement also said in this highly competitive corporate world, such negative acts should not be handled with kid gloves. It therefore urged the government to seriously consider enacting the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act to govern the conduct of Ghanaian businesses.
