MCE Missing At Confirmation

Drama unfolded at Assin Fosu in the Assin North Municipality of the Central Region over the weekend when the embattled Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area, Alex Antwi Boasiako failed to show up at his confirmation ceremony. The MCE had been rejected on two occasions by the assembly members. Daily Guide gathered that as at 8:30am all the assembly members, as well as the Electoral Commission (EC) Officer were seated at the assembly hall waiting the arrival of the MCE. However, they waited till 3pm. Daily Guide learnt that efforts by the EC official to reach Mr Boasiako on phone proved futile as his phone was switched off. An attempt by a delegation which moved to his residence as well as office failed to yield any positive result since he was nowhere to be found. The EC official, who was unhappy with the MCEs action, had no option than to inform the assembly members that voting would not take place due to the absence of the nominee. Reports suggested that the MCE was afraid he might be rejected again and therefore intensified lobbying before the election. The assembly members later stormed the assembly and demanded their allowances from the Municipal Co-ordinating Director (MCD). The MCD refused to give the assembly members their allowances, a situation which compelled them to rain insults on him. The paper learnt that the Central Regional Minister, Samuel Sarpong and his deputy Queenstar Pokuah Sawyer, as well as regional or constituency executives, did not take part in the confirmation ceremony. The refusal by the executives to attend the ceremony fuelled speculation that the MCE was aware that he would not be rejected by the assembly members. Mr. Boasiako polled 18 votes out of 47 votes in the first round of election. President John Dramani Mahama, in his attempt to impose the MCE on the people in the area, re-nominated him again. In the second round of voting, he polled 25 votes out of 47. They recorded an over vote so the election was declared invalid, which gave him another chance.
