The Ghana Trades Union Congress has given the government ten days to suspend the recent tariff adjustments. The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), announced tariff increments of 78.9 percent for electricity and 52 percent for water last month. The price changes took effect from October. The opposition parties, the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), Ghana Medical Association (GMA), amongst a raft of other civil society organisations and groups, have all kicked against the hikes. The TUC says it expects the Government to slash by one-third, the recent upward adjustments. Secretary General of the TUC, Kofi Asamoah, told journalists at a press conference on Tuesday, that the Congress will resort to using industrial means to impress upon the government to give workers a reprieve if nothing is done by the end of the ten-day ultimatum.
