Veep Attends AU Meeting In Ethiopia

The Vice-President, Mr Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, will leave Accra today for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to attend an extraordinary meeting of the African Union. The meeting, which will attract Heads of State and Governments from across the continent, will be held between October 11 and 13, 2013, at the headquarters of the union. A statement signed by a Presidential Staffer in-charge of Communications at the Office of the Vice-President, Mr Kweku Tsen, said the meeting was expected to, among other things, discuss the threat posed by Islamic militants on the continent, with recourse to the recent attack in Kenya. The attack at the West Gate Mall in Kenya claimed the lives of more than 60 people including Professor Kofi Awonoor, former Chairman of the Council of State. The Heads of State are further expected to dilate on the union's relationship with the International Criminal Court in the light of the trial of the President and Deputy President of Kenya, Mr Uhuru Kenyatta and Mr William Ruto, respectively. The raging crisis in northern African countries like Egypt, Tunisia and the Central African Republic is likely to engage the attention of the gathering. They are also likely to discuss the economic conditions in member countries, especially against the background of falling commodity prices which has resulted in a shortfall of revenue for governments to undertake infrastructure development and improve the material conditions of the people. The Vice-President is expected back in Accra on October 13, 2013.
