Military Intake 7 celebrates golden jubilee

Intake 7 of Ghana Military Academy (GMA) at the weekend celebrated its 50th anniversary at the Air Force Officers� Mess in Accra. Members of Intake 7 were recruited into the GMA in 1963 and commissioned in November 1965 by Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah to contribute to the development of the Ghana Armed Forces. Wing Commander Robert Owoo, President of Intake said the association was formed to promote the welfare of its members and to provide material and moral support and establish a forum where members can meet and interact. He noted that the group had produced high profile personalities such as a Chief of Defence Staff, Army and Navy Commanders and Ministers of Defence among others. He said members of the group have been very unique and purposeful during and after their military service. Wing Commander Owoo said, as part of activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary, members have donated GH� 500 to the Christian Council and are appealing for funds for the Kidney Centre at the Military Hospital. He urged members of the group to write their biographies for the benefit of the young and the generation yet unborn. Vice Admiral Mathew Quashie, Chief of Defence Staff congratulated the members and wished them well in the coming years. He said government effort to retool and develop the military is paying off as the Ghana Navy was recently adjudged the best in West Africa by the Africa Security Watch. He gave the assurance that he would promote fairness in the military by working according to procedures, regulation and ethics. Some distinguished members of the Intake 7 group were honoured and they included Lieutenant General Seth Obeng, former Chief of Defence Staff and Lieutenant General Joe Smith, former Minister of Defence. A roll call and memorial service were also held for the departed members.
