A family at Akyem Asafo in the East Akyem Municipality of the Eastern Region has accused authorities of Koforidua Government Hospital of dumping their dead body in a gutter. The body of a seven month-old baby was discovered in a gutter that links from the Hospital and joins Nsukwao River at the backyard of the Hospital on Thursday after it failed to rain despite the cloudy weather condition. The baby was found in the gutter with a peg holding the naval and attached to a name of the mother of the baby on the chest. This attracted many residents of the area and passers-by to the scene until the body was retrieved back to the hospital morgue by the Hospital Authorities. The situation has led to trading of accusations between the family and Hospital authorities. Whereas authorities of Koforidua Central Hospital are accusing the family of dumping the baby in the gutter having handed over the body to them, the family, however, says the Hospital is to be blamed for the act. Speaking to the Daily Heritage, Dr. Anim Boamah, Medical Superintendent of Koforidua Government Hospital said the mother of the deceased, Diana Odoi was admitted at the hospital barely three weeks ago, unfortunately one of her twin babies died after being in an incubator for a week and the body was handed over to the family for burial which was executed by the Family. He said, on the October 7, 2013 the second baby also passed away and similar due process was followed, and the body of the baby was handed over to the family for burial. According to Dr. Anim Boamah, it came as a surprise to see the body of the baby dumped in the gutter on the October 10, 2013. He, however, said the case has been reported to the Police for investigation. However, according to Mary Tei, a mother in-law to Diana Odoi, mother of the dead twin babies, an amount of GH�20.00 was collected by an Official at the Regional Hospital to ensure that the baby is buried by the Hospital after contemplating on traditional bureaucracy to pass through again for the burial of the second baby. Mary Tei told the paper that, the Hospital Authorities cannot acquit absolve themselves from of the unfortunate incident, adding that the family is ready to assist in investigations into the matter.
