9 Arrested For Terrorising, Robbing Spectators

Nine suspected gangsters, including five teenagers who allegedly took advantage of the bustling activities in Kumasi after the Black Stars� victory over Egypt and robbed some people of their belongings, have been arrested by the police. According to the police, Fuseini Rafiu, 25; Isaka Ibrahim, 19; Ibrahim Alidie, 18; Mohammed Zakaria, 20, as well as the five teenagers were among a gang of about 40 who terrorised people, mostly spectators, in the night and made away with mobile phones, cash and other personal belongings. The five teenagers are aged between 13 and 17. A machete and sharp knife were retrieved from two of them. The Asokwa District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police (Mr) S.N. Adane-Ameyaw, told the media that as the spectators left the stadium for their homes, the armed gangsters robbed some of them at Afful Nkwanta and the area around the abandoned Children�s Park. The attacks were reported to the Asokwa Police who moved to the area. Supt Adane-Ameyaw said when the police reached the scene, they were told by eyewitnesses that some of the gangsters had hidden in the bushy Children�s Park. Consequently, the police surrounded the area they suspected the hoodlums were hiding and managed to arrest six of them. A search on them revealed GH�70, three mobile phones and MTN and Vodafone scratch cards. The six were sent to the Asokwa Police Station while the police continued their search which led to the arrest of three more robbers at Afful Nkwanta. They were also searched and a machete and knife were found on them. The district commander said the suspects were in custody and would be arraigned today for them to be remanded for investigations to continue.
