A HIGH Court in Ho has sentenced a fisherman, Kwetey Kofi Afeti (from an island on the Volta Lake, Gabikpo, near Kpando), to death by hanging.
Afeti is to suffer this fate for stabbing a perceived rival, Amos Ahugble, to death during a party.
A seven-member jury of the court found Afeti guilty of murder at the court, presided over by Mr Justice Patrick Baayeh.
A Senior State Attorney of the Attorney General�s Department in Ho, Mr Simon Adatsi, the prosecutor, said on January 2, 2008, at about 6.45 p.m., the chief fisherman of Gabikpo, Mr Batholomew Kwaku, alias Kalitse, organised a dance and merrymaking in his house and invited all fishermen in the area.
He said while the merrymaking was going on, Afeti saw Ahugble chatting with his wife, Ama Dede, and got infuriated. He therefore confronted him bitterly which degenerated in a fight.
Mr Adatsi said Afeti, having realised that his opponent was a much stronger person, rushed home and picked a knife and came back to confront Ahugble again, and in the process, stabbed him in the chest, killing him instantly.
He said pandemonium broke out at the party but some of the youth mustered courage, arrested Afeti and made a report to the Kpando police.
