Two Drown At Esiama During Beach Get-Together

The bodies of two persons who drowned at the Monkey Hill stretch of the Esiama Beach in the Western Region at the weekend have been washed ashore. The two drowned when one went to the rescue of the other, who was in distress. The deceased, together with others, had gone to the beach for a get-together. One of them has been identified as Daniel Dzumah, 19, a final-year Arts student of the Esiama Senior High School, while the other, who is yet to be identified, is said to be a graduate of the Nkroful Agriculture Senior High School. According to Mr Elvis Kusi, a teacher, who was present at the beach that day, Dzumah, who was his student, in the company of two other persons, had earlier gone over to greet him. Mr Kusi said since Dzumah was one of his final-year students, he (the teacher) had had a brief interaction with Dzumah, after which he saw the deceased and his friends swimming at another area, away from where the others were swimming in a group. He said while they were swimming, friends who were in the water with Dzumah said they saw him struggling to keep afloat, and since they could not help him, they shouted for help. Mr Kusi said according to the friends, the former student of Nkroful Agric SHS, who responded to the distress call and went to Dzumahs rescue, did not surface when he dived to save the drowning teenager. Meanwhile, according to an official of the school who does not want to be named, Dzumah, who was staying at the schools hostel, became a day student when the hostel was converted into a dormitory for the school two weeks ago. The official said among other restrictions, boarding students could not go to the beach to swim or partake in social activities outside the school, infering that those restrictions might have made Dzumah opt to rent a place in the community. When the Daily Graphic contacted the police, they confirmed the incident and said the two bodies had been washed ashore.
