The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) says any attempt to reduce the current utility tariffs will plunge the country into another era of load-shedding.
The PURC says it has no plans of revising the tariffs despite threats of by organized labour.
Labour Unions across the country are planning a coordinated strike and demonstration on November 18 after government failed to meet its 10-day ultimatum to reduce the recent tariff increments.
Government has however appealed to the members of organized labour to rescind its decision.
Director of Public Relations and External Affairs at the Commission, Nana Yaa Gyantuah told Citi News, noted that if government gives in to the demands of organized labour will collapse the country�s utility companies.
�This is the barest minimum the utility service providers got for just for operations and maintenance�if we cut this tariff, then it means that we want to look at a situation where we will go back into load-shedding and my point is that and the PURC�s stand is that who doesn�t want to pay lower tariffs, but this is the situation.�
Meanwhile, the PURC says it is studying a report presented to it by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) on prepaid meters.
The PURC demanded the report following complaints by consumers about anomalies with the meters after the new tariff adjustment.
Ms Gyantuah told Citi News, an action will be taken on the report based on the outcome of its investigations.
�We are still studying the report�but going forward, what we are also going to do is to investigate these prepaid meters and how they work and why we are seeing some of these problems like some of them getting burnt and some of the issues of the billing.�
