Forget about applying for admission into the College of Education, Midwifery and Nursing Training and any of the security agencies if you do not happen to know an influential person. Tens and Thousands of Ghanaians qualify to be in these institutions, yet, they don�t get admission, perhaps because their family members know absolutely no one of influence to act as the go-between for them. This, according to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Berekum East in the Brong-Ahafo Region, Dr. Kwabena Twum Nuamah, increases corruption in the country. �We all know in Ghana the phrase �Whom You Know� is a clich�. Since I became MP, I can�t count the number of times I have personally assisted people during admission periods in my hometown into the Nursing and Teacher training colleges and even other institutions. I think all these are corrupt practices and we know and must put a stop to it� �These corrupt acts do not only go on in our educational system but also at our ports. If you don�t grease someone�s palm, things will not go well for you,� he lamented. Speaking on Accra-based Asempa FM, the NPP MP opined that in order to ensure a corruption free society, politicians must desist using their offices to exploit Ghanaians. �Some also use their positions to earn money at the expense of the state. We all know this is wrong. Ghanaians must also be blame for such practices. We all assume that the position one is occupying must be an opportunity to amass wealth. Our mindset even pushes people to become corrupt�If you are privileged to be appointed as a public servant, it is not an opportunity to loot from government coffers,� he counseled.
