Soldiers On The Loose �As Military Vehicle Chases Lumber Driver To Cause Horrific Accident

Uniform military officers on-board a military vehicle on Tuesday caused a deadly accident at Old Estate, a suburb of Koforidua in the New Juaben Municipality of the Eastern region when chasing a Mitsubishi Pick Up fully loaded with illegal lumber from Nyamekrom, a community in the municipality. The Pick Up with vehicle registration number ER 8987 C which was over speeding to avoid the grips of the law knocked down and dragged Ebenezer Awuku, 21, to about 100 meters distance before stopping. Eyewitnesses� accounts revealed that immediately after the accident the military officers who were chasing the vehicle stopped, turned and sped away. The victim sustained serious head injury, fractured spinal cord and other body injuries and was rushed to St Joseph`s Orthopedics Hospital in Koforidua. He was later transferred to the Korle�Bu Teaching Hospital after thorough medical examination. Information gathered by the Daily Heritage newspaper indicated that the victim was walking along the road at around 7 pm when the Mitsubishi vehicle knocked him down. An eye witness said he heard a bump before looking round to see the victim being dragged by the vehicle. Other witnesses said they shouted at the lumber driver before his attention was drawn to the incident. According to the eyewitness, the driver upon seeing the angry mob approaching abandoned the vehicle and took to his heels. They said residents in the area overturned the vehicle before they were able to retrieve the victim from under the vehicle. �Blood was gushing out of the victim�s head and body where he sustained serious degrees of injuries.� A witness said. Officials of the Eastern Regional Motor Transport and Traffic Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service were at the scene to maintain order. In an interview with the Eastern Regional Commander of MTTU, Supt. Samuel Tetteh, he said the driver of the Pick Up vehicle, Kwabena Nyarko, 22, has been apprehended and he has mentioned one Asiedu as one of the military men who were chasing him. He pledged that his outfit will investigate the incident and bring any culprit found to book.
