MPs Attend Budget Workshop

Members of Parliament will attend a post-budget workshop at Parliament House on Sunday, November 24 and Monday, November 25. The Majority Leader and Minister of Government Business in Parliament, Dr Benjamin Kunbuor who made this known in Parliament yesterday said the workshop is to equip members of Parliament, especially the new members, with the requisite knowledge on how they could contribute effectively to the debate on the 2014 budget which would commence on Tuesday, November 26. The post-budget workshop has been a norm for members of Parliament every financial year but the exception this year is that the workshop would be held in Parliament, precisely in the chamber because there is not much money to organise it outside Parliament as is normally the practice. The Majority leader explained that the leadership had wanted to organise the workshop at GIMPA but the conference hall at GIMPA would not be able to accommodate the 275 members of Parliament as well as selected staff and resource persons. He said the leadership, therefore, settled on the chamber so that members would be comfortable to participate in the workshop while helping cut down cost. Most members were not happy about Sunday, November 24 being part of the days for the workshop because the Christians among them would not have the opportunity to go to church. The leadership has also decided that during debate on the budget in Parliament each honourable member would be allotted 10 minutes to make his or her contribution while the leaders in Parliament would have 15 minutes to make their inputs.
