Accra Brewery Limited Begins Major Expansion Project

Accra Brewery Limited (ABL), subsidiary of SABMiller plc, has once again demonstrated its confidence in the economy by cutting the sod for a multi-million dollar expansion project at its brewery site, on Graphic Road in Adabraka. The expansion project is expected to double the companys capacity and is estimated to be executed over a period of 12 to 24 months. The investment in this expansion project is valued at approximately USD100million and entails the construction of two new state of the art packaging lines, a new warehouse, material storage areas and a waste treatment plant. Others include electricity sub-station, vehicle workshop and an ultra-modern office complex. Based on SABMillers ten sustainable development priorities, all emissions and effluent product disposal systems will be designed and operated to project the environment, conserve water and meet statutory standards. In line with this, a waste water treatment plant fitted with yeast digester is to be constructed. Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, Minsiter of Trade and Industry, cut the sod to commence the project. He was ably supported by the President of the Ga Traditional Council; Dr. Charles Mensa, Board Chairman of ABL and Gregory Metcalf, Managing Director of ABL. Speaking at the event, Hon. Iddrisu stated that the expansion is a historic event as it will create more jobs at ABL and the subsequent production will translate into more sales for ABL and more tax revenue for government. He commended the management of ABL and its parent company, SABMiller plc, for their far-sightedness and for having faith in the economy of Ghana. He added that it will serve as an example to other investors to also come to Ghana and invest in manufacturing. Mr. Gregory Metcalf, the Managing Director of ABL acknowledged Governments support in bringing this expansion dream into fruition with the introduction of the policy encouraging the use of local raw materials for excisable goods.
