The Director General of Prisons, Madam Matilda Baffour- Awuah, says indiscipline is tearing the service apart. Consequently, she appealed to Retired Prison Officers Association (REPOA) to mentor their relatives who are serving officers, in order to make them responsible for the Service to achieve the desired recognition and rise up to the occasion. She made this appeal during the association�s end of year get-together organised at the Senior Officers� Mess, Cantonment, in Accra. Madam Baffour-Awuah appealed to members of the Retired Prison Officers Association (REPOA) to engage people in position to make them better understand the operations and problems of the Service, in order to attract public support and put the Service in the limelight. She stressed that the retirees should position themselves in a manner that would bring on board certain benefits to the Ghana Prisons Service, so that �together we can do our bid to raise the image of the Service to a level that all of us will be proud of.� She added that the welfare of pensioners is of paramount concern and that in collaboration with their executives, they would transform the association into an enviable one, thereby improving on pensions and retirement benefits. Madam Baffour-Awuah revealed that her vision was to build on the positive legacies of her predecessors and also inject new ideas that would propel the Service to a higher level. �My dream is to improve the prisons system and bring it up to par with modern correctional services around the world, and to ensure that the Service meets all international obligations that the country has ratified as a member of the United Nations (UN),� she added. The chairman of REPOA, Deputy Director of Prisons (DDP) O.K.T. Kodua (Rtd), in an address, pledged the association�s support to Madam Baffour-Awuah as the first female Director General of the Prisons Service, and thanked her for equipping the association�s office with computers and an air conditioner. Mr Kodua revealed that during the year under review, the association registered 60 new members, but lost six through death. He thanked members for their support and wished them a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in advance. Present at the event were former Director Generals Mr Michael Kofi Bansah, Col. J.B. Oti Prempeh (Rtd). Former Directors of Prisons included Mr I.K. Tsegah, Mr E.C. Adjei-Koreeh, Mr H.O. Koney, Madam C.C. Kumassey, Madam Gloria Lassey and Mr. Ollenu (former head of Retired Fire Service Association).
