Stop Politicizing Daily Activities

Mr Adzei Annang, Greater Accra Regional member of the Council of State has bemoaned the over politicization of virtually every activity in the country, especially in the media. According to him," politics has taken over the norms and ethics of journalism, to the extent that the shape and focus of stories are determined by the political affiliation of the person financially supporting that media house. Politicizing everything is dangerous for the future growth of this country. Mr Annang, who made the complaint at a press briefing organized by the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, said, Watch television and see, some stations are always reporting only negative things without educating the people on what to do to rectify the problem. Let us stick to norms and ethics instead of over politicization of our daily lives, he stressed. According to him, due to such politicization, a well planned city such as Tema had become a slum since individuals and institutions such as the TMA and the Tema Development Corporation (TDC) had failed to do what is right. He noted that because Assembly Members do not want to lose their seats during election time, they looked on while residents do the wrong thing. Mr Annang observed that due to politicization of issues, institutions and individuals had sold out all the green belt areas in Tema, explaining that the green belt areas in Tema were not only for beautification purposes but rather to absorb gasses released into the atmosphere by the many industries operating in the harbour city. The Council of State member said the green belt near the industrial area in community nine, had been taken over by garages, bar operators among others, leading to the exposure of residents to gasses emanating from such industries. Mr Isaac Ashai Odamtten, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive Officer, gave the assurance that his administration would restore Tema to its former glory through measures such as cleaning up the Metropolis.
