Fake Police Officer Arrested

The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man who posed as a police officer with another who is said to have been dismissed from the Service at Tamale. The suspect, Ishmael Bashiru, together with his accomplice, George Atipoli, was spotted by the Police Patrol Team at Community 18 Junction on the Spintex Road in police uniforms inspecting vehicles at about 12:20 am on Monday December 16. According to COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, who briefed the press in Accra yesterday, the patrol team became suspicious when they saw the two men and therefore questioned them about their station and unit of the police they belonged to. He said when Bashiru was asked of his service number he mentioned Number 24 as a constable, a number COP Yohuno said was for officers and not constables. When the police tried to arrest them, George managed to escape. He said efforts were being made to arrest him. When asked how he came by the uniform, Bashiru told the police that his accomplice, who was an ex-police officer, gave him the uniform. The Police Commander said he was surprised as to how a dismissed police officer could still have access to police uniform. In a related development a 38-year-old graduate teacher has also been arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command for imposing as a politician to defraud people. The suspect, Fred Kporha, according to the police, can change his voice to suit any politician he wants to pose as. COP Tetteh said facts available to the police are that in 2012 the suspect went to the office of the complainant (name withheld) and during their interaction the suspect collected the complimentary card of the complainant. In mid-2012 the suspect called the complainant and posed as a politician and used his position to influence the complainant to accept his sister to do National Service with a reputable organization in Accra, although she was posted outside Accra. Later, the self-styled politician requested from the complainant to employ his sister to work with the reputable organization and his sisters name has since been placed on the awaiting list. But the Human Resource Manager of the organization got suspicious of his act and contacted the person he was posing to be. The suspect was later lured and arrested by the police around the Efua Sutherland Childrens Park.
