Teachers urged to re-dedicate themselves to profession

Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman, Minister of Education, on Wednesday called on teachers to re-dedicate themselves to the profession to improve on quality education delivery. She said the Ministry had declared zero tolerance for absenteeism and any teacher found culpable would be dealt with. Prof. Opoku-Agyeman was speaking at the opening of the Fourth Quadrennial National Delegates Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) on the theme: �Education in Crisis - The Development Agenda Beyond 2015,� in Accra. �This year I will continue the visitation to schools across the country unannounced,� she said. She said improvement in the quality education delivery in the country was a shared responsibility and urged stakeholders to join hands to address the crisis. She said Government had attached the greatest importance to the education sector, hence the investment in the various areas of the sector. Prof Opoku-Agyeman said Government through the Ministry of Education would continue to partner stakeholders, especially the GNAT to enhance education. Nii Armah Ashitey, Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, urged workers to be moderate in their demand for increase in salaries. He called on labour unions to use the appropriate mechanisms to dialogue with government concerning their grievances.
