SSNIT Refutes Law Suit Allegations

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has refuted allegations that some members of its Board of Trustees are considering suing the organisation on the sale of Merchant Bank. SSNIT stated this in reaction to an article published by an Accra daily on Thursday, January 9, 2014, which alleged that Messrs Alhaji Mahamadu Asibi Azongo (POTAGL), Kwame Amo-Dako (GNATL), Prince William Ankrah (Mine Workers) and Theodore Nee Okpey (National Pensioners' Association) were contemplating on taking legal action against SSNIT. A rejoinder signed by Ms Evangeline Amegashie, Corporate Affairs Manager of SSNIT, and copied to the Ghana News Agency said SSNIT's personal contact with the afore-named Trustees had unequivocally revealed that they had not attended any meeting at which they ever decided to be part of a suit against SSNIT, nor had they taken any individual decision to sue SSNIT. SSNIT would also like the public to know that beyond its Board Meeting, it also met Organised Labour before the final 'no objection letter' was received by Bank of Ghana on Merchant Bank acquisition. At the meeting, SSNIT also explained vividly the steps involved and the details of the acquisition of Merchant Bank by Fortiz Equity Fund, said the rejoinder. It therefore assured all SSNIT stakeholders that the Trust would continue to take decisive, transparent and defensible decisions aimed at sustaining the fund and hence protect the interest of contributors.
