Franklin Cudjoe Questions NPA: Why Is Ghana Not Importing Crude Oil From Nigeria...?

Franklin Cudjoe, President of IMANI Ghana is wondering why Ghana keeps importing petroleum products from further and colder regions when there is fuel in Nigeria, our next door neighbor. By what science is the National Petroleum Authority guided to report that the shortage of fuel in the past two weeks is due in part to leaner staff for bulk importers, for a product that sells at a profit? And then we are told the colder weather in the west is responsible for slow importation, but why? Don't we have economic forecasters? Don't we know these weather patterns? And why should we solely depend on importation from further and colder regions when there is a lot of fuel in Nigeria, our next door neighbour? he asked. The founding President and Chief Executive Officer of the IMANI Center for Policy and Education made these comments in reaction to the NPAs explanations as to why fuel shortages has hit parts of the capital city for the past two weeks via his facebook page. The NPA has also stated that the shortage is as a result of reduced output capacity of the product on the market by vendors due to the holidays. However, the Public Relations Officer of NPA, Yaro Kassambata is of the view and insists that there is no fuel shortage. He said the authority will investigate the reason why some fuel stations in the capital does not have fuel. If a section of the capital city does not have fuel, it is not representative of the situation in the country. Nonetheless, Franklin Cudjoe of IMANI Ghana is convinced that it is not economically wise to import fuel from countries that are far from Ghana since Nigeria is a major producer of oil.
