Local Government Ministry Strengthens CRVS Policies

Mr Akwasi Oppong-Fosu, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, says the Ministry is committed to continue to develop appropriate policies and strategies to reform and improve Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) systems. Mr Oppong-Fosu gave the commitment when a five-member delegation led by Mr Stephen Amoah, Assistant Chief Statistician, Ghana Statistical Service paid a courtesy call on him to update him on activities of the CRVS. He said the formulation of laws and policies would ensure the collection of accurate data for national planning and development and ensure the guarantee of equal access for all persons in the country. Mr Oppong-Fosu said it is imperative that proper strategies, mechanisms and institutional linkages are put in place to interface and integrate requirements of all stakeholders to ensure the efficient running of the systems. He expressed the need for stakeholders to map out ways to boost accessibility to more reliable civil registration data. Mr Oppong-Fosu said the ministry would soon form and inaugurate a committee with members from all the agencies under it to collaborate with foreign partners to achieve the goals of the registration. Mr Amoah said civil registration is for the purpose of proper planning and generation of accurate data for the development of every country and the generation of revenue at the local level.
