Government Announces Plans To Build Sports Based Schools

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah has intimated that ten out of the two hundred schools to be built by the government will be sports based. Out of this, one each will be located in specified areas to be selected throughout the 10 regions. Mr Afriyie-Ankrah disclosed this at Kpando on the first day of his two-day working visit to the Volta region to inspect sports facilities and infrastructure. The Sports Minister said special designs have been drawn and will soon be approved by the President. At a meeting with the Paramount Chief of Akpini Traditional Area, Togbe Dagadu, Mr Afriyie-Ankrah noted that Kpando has a premier football club in the region and it is proper to put in shape the sports stadium to conveniently host other tournaments. Mr Afriyie-Ankrah appealed to the chiefs and elders to pray for the Black Stars in their forthcoming World Cup bid. Togbe Dagadu noted that sports especially football is one of the attributes of Kpando. He said the first sports stadium in the Volta region was built in 1920 and this facility has never seen any expansion or rehabilitation. Togbe Dagadu said Kpando Mulpo Football Club formed in the early 1960s was then competing effectively with clubs like Hearts and Kotoko. It was during one of such matches with Mulpo that the late Baba Yara was involved in the accident in which he was killed. Togbe Dagadu pledged additional 26 acres for the expansion of the Kpando stadium, Togbe Dagadu and the Sports Minister later inspected the stadium. They also inspected multi-purpose base-ball court under construction at the Anfoega Senior High School.
