Gov't Is Aloof To Plight Of Ghanaians Methodist Bishop

The Methodist Bishop of Obuasi diocese, Right Reverend Stephen Bosomtwe Ayensu has described the Mahama administration as asleep and aloof to the plight and concerns of Ghanaians. According to him the current administration has failed to resolve the economic hardship the people are experiencing. "All that we are saying is the government must wake up, there are many things happening and going on economic wise and others, but it looks as if a government which we think is a father and mother is sitting aloof whiles we [Ghanaians] are crying and it is not minding us." Speaking on Eyewitness News, Rev. Bosomtwe Ayensu said the government has failed to address concerns of the masses as it continues to take harsh economic decisions and policies. "Many Ghanaians do not see what is happening, many of us do not know where the government is taking the nation to; I am not condemning the government, all that I am trying to do is help the government know what the mind of the people is." He further stated that government is continuously increasing taxes, tariffs and others. Last year water and electricity rates were increased and as soon as we entered into 2014 petrol has been increased, capitation is being mismanaged" Reverend Ayensu said it is important to voice out the challenges and frustrations of the people else, we may not see the light of the day". "Why did we put the government there? We want the leadership to sit down and assess the situation that we find ourselves in," he concluded. But in responses to the man of God, Deputy Information and Media Relations Minister, Felix Ofosu Kwakye said government is not insensitive to the challenges the Ghanaian is facing. "I beg to differ that government led by President Mahama is insensitive and does not want to do anything to address the contemporary challenges facing the people of this country; President since day one has led his government to move to resolve the problems that confront the people of this country." He cited governments introduction of 25 percent reduction in the utility tariff adjustment in the middle of 2013 when the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) announced new tariff as an example.
