We Shot At Demonstrators Because They Played "Cat And Mouse Game" With Us Police

Several reports have trickled in after heavily armed policemen in the Ashanti Region, managed to forcefully disperse hundreds of protestors who demonstrated on Monday about the deplorable condition of their roads in the Kwabre East District. The police service has since the incident been accused of using rubber and live bullets, as well as tear gas to break up the peaceful marchers who called on government to fix their bad roads. But when Okay FM contacted the Ashanti Regional Deputy Police PRO to give a vivid account of what transpired on Monday, he narrated an entirely different story. Sergeant Godwin Ahianyo attributed the violence that erupted to a cat and mouse game which broke out between the security service and the irate protestors. He accused some of the demonstrators of taking the laws into their hands and acting unwisely during the initial peaceful march. According to him, as the number of demonstrators swelled up, despicable events unfolded, and the police had to resort to the use of force to calm the situation. Prior to this, he revealed that they had used verbal communication to impress on the demonstrators, the need to halt their action. He recounted that things became worse when some rumor mongers among the protestors started spreading news that the police had killed one of them. This led to the demonstrators pelting the police with stones, inflicting severe wounds on some of the police personnel. "They ended up destroying police patrol cars and playing a cat and mouse game with the armed men....They broke the teeth of a police man and injured other officers in the process, Sergeant Godwin Ahianyo said. He cautioned the media to be circumspect when reporting on such sensitive issues and added that leaders of demonstrators should always do well to control the people they intend to embark on a protest march with.
