The Christian Council has given indications that churches are ready to pay the salaries of teachers in mission schools if the government hands over schools to them. The Council has called on government to return all mission schools to the churches to ensure improved performance and discipline. However, there have been concerns on whether or not government will continue to pay the teachers if it stops running the schools. The General Secretary of the Council, Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong told Citi News, teachers might be better paid under the churches since the schools will be run as private entities. He cited the running of private universities in the country as being capital intensive as compared to high schools and so he suggested that �if we get an LI [Legislative Instrument] that allows the schools to be run as private schools, it means the churches will take fees and pay teachers as they have to.� Rev. Dr. Opuni-Frimpong observed that depending on the guidelines which will be given in the LI if the schools are handed over, �we may be able to pay them even better.�
