The Member of Parliament (MP) for Dome/Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has expressed grave concern about the spate of drug abuse among the youth across the globe.
She made this known when she joined a team of young politicians to develop strategies to combat crime globally. The meeting which was organised by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom was also intended to promote dialogue and foster negotiation, peace building and to also facilitate stability within conflict-prone zones across the world.
It was first introduced by William Hague, when he became the Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom.
William Hague�s vision was to groom young and intelligent politicians from across the world through nurturing and mentorship for young people to become world class politicians.
The Dome/Kwabenya legislator who was the only youngest African selected to participate in the meeting held in Downing Street, London, was elated that a platform of that nature had been created to tackle issues confronting the youth.
She told the press after the conference that the time had come for the youth to join hands globally to deal with some societal cankers that were fast eroding the youthful resources that were needed to take care of the future and the generations ahead.
Ms Safo said certain global societal diseases like drug abuse, cyber crimes and the wanton abuse of the youthful age were threatening the future ahead, as most youth were seen to be actively involved in such cankers.
She said the programme gave them the opportunities to synergize and draw experiences from member countries to find solutions to the cankers.
The week long programme included meetings and interactions with the Chief Executive of Wilton Park, a UK-based organization that seeks to promote dialogue and foster peacemaking in conflict zones across the world.
The team also received briefings from the Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police in the UK, Ms Cressida Dick, who gave them insight into the UK Police Service.
The group also had the opportunity to interact with the Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow, who shed light on the independence of the UK Speaker, the Westminster parliamentary procedures and rules and proceedings.
Finally, the participants were also hosted by the UK Secretary of Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs.
John Bercow congratulated the team for the wonderful and marvelous work they were doing in their respective countries in strengthening democracy and rule of law.
He revealed to them that they were chosen to participate in the programme because of their diligence and further urged them to continue with their good work.
Participants included Senator Armando Rios Pitter, Member of Parliament of Mexico, and former Majority Leader, Dr Jerupan Culdiloke, former Member of Parliament for Thailand and Ms Corin Robertson, UK�s Deputy High Commissioner to Ottawa, Canada.
