Alltel Limited, a local integrated communications services provider has signed a $25 million agreement with Eutelsat Communications, to undertake e-learning programme, in the country.
The programme, to be implemented by the Kludjeson Institute of Technology, would provide long-distance e-learning education in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), media, health, finance, accounting and agriculture.
Under the three-year agreement, Eutelsat Communications would provide satellite internet services to Alltel Limited to enable it roll out the programme.
The Executive Chairman of Alltel Limited, Dr Prince Kofi Kludjeson, said the programme, was the first in Africa, and hoped by it, every Ghanaian, irrespective of location, would have access to education.
He said with the advent of ICT, the frontiers of education have broaden and moving from classroom to internet-based learning.
Under the programme e-learning centres would established in all the districts of the country.
So far a 200 sitting capacity centre has been opened in the Ghana House Building, near the Ghana Post Head Officer in Accra while 60 district have been to kick-start the programme�, Dr Kludjeson disclosed.
Also all the 600 Senior High Schools in the each country would be provided e-learning centres, about 50-100 computers each and connected to the internet to run the programme.
�Each student who enrols for the course will be provided a K-Pad, to access the programme wherever he or she is Dr Kludjeson promised.
Alltel looks forward to enrolling about 1000 students this year and they could be workers and even security personnel.
