Are you planning on buying a new television set? Then you should be prepared to pay more upon purchase because the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) will from April 14 this year, re-introduce television licenses.
The licensing regime will affect households with television sets but GBC says the initial stages will be done at the point of sale.
According to the GBC, television retailers will pay a sum of GHC 2 on any television set sold and this cost is expected to be passed on to the consumers.
The Director General of the GBC, Major Don Chebe (rtd) in an interview with Citi News said, the re-introduction of the TV licenses in is accordance with the law.
The categories of users who are required by law to pay a licensing fee are hoteliers, restaurant owners; TV set repairers, importers and retailers of TV sets.
He explained that these categories of TV users will be targeted during the implementation of the said law.
Don Chebe clarified that when his outfit intends to charge individual owners and users of TV sets, �we are not going to go from door to door� but they will employ the use of modern technology to collect the fees.
He admonished retailers of TV sets �to charge the fee at the point of sale or point of purchase.�
