Government Not Responsible For Tombs Of Ex-Servicemen

Commodore Steve Obimpeh (rtd), Chairman of the Veterans Association of Ghana, (VAG) on Friday denied accusation against the government that it had neglected the tombs of the victims of the 28th February Christianburg Crossroad Shooting. According to Commodore Obimpeh it was wrong for the families of the victims to accuse the government because it handed over the remains of the three victims to their families over 60 years ago, hence had no control over them. In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sidelines of the Remembrance Day in Accra, he said the government on its part had erected a bust in memory of the three fallen heroes apart from holding Remembrance Service for them every year to honour them. Commodore Obimpeh said those were the governments contribution towards honouring the three ex-service men and called on the families to stop the accusation of not maintaining the tombs as they (families) had taken full custody of the remains of their beloved a long time ago. He also refuted reports in some sections of the media that some pensioners were still not receiving their entitlements at the end of the month adding that every pensioner who took part in the biometric registration of pensioners got their entitlements at the end of each month. It is only the pensioners who were abroad and perhaps did not take part in the biometric registration who encounter challenges accessing their pension, he added. Commodore Obimpeh said the government invited the pupils to observe the ceremony this year to help them be abreast with that aspect of Ghanas history and that the initiative was also to help them inculcate the spirit of selflessness to serve the nation.
