For forms of government, let the fools contest; whatever is best administered is best governed� � British Political Philosopher, Lord Acton The reason why patriotic Ghanaians took part in a referendum to usher in the 1992 Constitution is so that their standard of living will improve and most importantly, they want to take part in the governance process of this country. Embedded in the Constitution is freedom of speech and association. Every Ghanaian of sound mind and who attains the age of 18 has a civic duty to take part in the election of our leaders, especially the President and Members of Parliament (MP). The Constitution also prescribes for who is qualified to contest for the position of a President. At the turn of every four years, when Ghanaians turn up at the polls to cast their votes or before then during the electioneering campaign, very interesting and bizarre characters take advantage of the Constitution to put themselves up for elections. Often, a lot of them although will make a lot of ugly noises fail to pass the registration process with the Electoral Commission (EC). Some of them because of the comic nature associated with the way they talk or conduct themselves, leave a memory engraved on our minds. Some things and people can be annoying and nauseating, but unfortunately that is the obnoxious by-product of democracy. Every fool thinks he or she is also capable of running this country. Whether this is well informed and intended or it is because of the failure of the system or the successive governments we have since 1992, time will tell. Democracy is indeed expensive In the run-up to the 2012 elections, entered Akua Donkor, Founder and leader of Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), she stirred a lot of controversy and made a mockery of our fledgling democracy. When she failed to file her papers and was disqualified, she joined Paa Kwesi Nduom�s Progressive Peoples Party (PPP). When I heard the news and watched them on Television, I asked myself, what can two losers give to each other. A friend of mine always tells me that two poor people have nothing in common. To say I was surprised, was an understatement, I was really scandalized and saddened, this is an astute politician, who has been an Assembly man before and rose to become a Member of Parliament (MP), he contested the Presidency in 2008 on the ticket of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) and so he has gone through the political rope. Dr Nduom is an accomplished businessman and well educated, so what could possibly make him think Akua Donkor has something to offer him, especially electorally. He had a rude shock of his life and a taste of the medicine she served other candidates during the campaign, when he demanded for the car he gave her during their marriage. The honeymoon was soon over but Akua Donkor was still living in her dream. She refused to hand over the car, until Dr. Nduom showed her that but for school, he is also ruthless. Speaking on Adom FM, last Friday, Madam Akua Donkor had this to say. I�ll Sue Nana Addo, He�s A �Thief� He Stole My �Free SHS Education� Policy!!! The Founder and leader of Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Akua Donkor has labeled the 2012 Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) a �thief�. According to her, the �Free SHS Education� policy which some NPP members including their 2012 flagbearer have claimed ownership was exclusively introduced by her though she did not get the nod from the Electoral Commission (EC) to pursue that dream as a Presidential candidate in the 2012 polls. Stressing on her policy, she said the �Free SHS Education� was boldly written on her posters during the 2012 election campaign and everyone saw it but because she did not meet the requirements of the EC, it was �stolen� by the NPP. �Akufo-Addo was thrilled with my campaign message and knew it was well accepted by Ghanaians so he opted for it when I was disqualified,� she said. �I personally told him I will sue him for that because I owned that, he stole my policy, he is a thief,� she added. The free SHS policy, a catchphrase trumpeted by the NPP in 2008 which was restructured for the 2012 elections, was fiercely resisted by the NDC who argued that more emphasis be placed on quality and access rather than making it free. To recall, President Mahama wrote on his official twitter and Facebook accounts in 2012 that �Free SHS is a misplaced priority if primary school pupils still pay fees. Let�s make primary free first�. However, President Mahama delivering his State of the Nation Address to Parliament on Tuesday February 25, 2014, announced the abolishing of fees in Day Senior High Schools by 2015/2016 academic year and the subsequent introduction of a progressively free SHS. But the announcement has been met with mixed reactions with the NPP accusing the Mahama-led administration of �stealing� its idea, an allegation the government has vehemently denied. But speaking on Adom FM, Friday, Madam Akua Donkor noted that, the NPP led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2012 had an All Die Be Die message. �He (Nana Addo) was campaigning for All Die Be Die and I stood for free education, why must he steal my policy? I advised Mahama to think about the free education which is laudable. I am processing documents and will sue Nana Addo,� she said. I had vow after this post that I was not going to write anything, because it just exposes the depth at which politics had sunk in this country, but I just remembered that Madam Akua Donkor is deficient in the English language, so am going to appeal to anybody close to her to kindly tell her that politics is a serious enterprise and so must be left for serious minded people. Nana Addo is not her co-equal, she is not more knowledgeable than Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to steal her policy. Does she understand what free Senior High school (SHS) means at all? She will better serve this country, if she could resign herself to farming and taking care of her grandchildren. We have too many comedians already and for her, unfortunately she is past the age where she can make any headway in that industry, because she is not even funny. I don�t think she is even qualified for a role in any of the Kumawood movies. She should spare us ignorance. I don�t blame her, Nana Addo and his two colleagues who petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn the results of the 2012 elections in their favour are the ones who showed her the way to the court. As we say in Ghana, it serves him right.
