The Foods and Drugs Authority (FDA) is strongly advising all drug retailers in the country to purchase their stock of medicine from only licensed importers. This follows a detection of a fake brand of the Zentel dewormer on the market, on Friday. Zentel is an over-the-counter drug that is meant for the treatment of single or mixed intestinal parasites. In recent times, there have been several media reports and warnings from the FDA regarding the influx of fake and unregistered medicines either imported or produced in Ghana on the market. Some pharmaceutical companies have been ordered to re-export the imported drugs back to the suppliers. The FDA is, therefore, says that retailers such as pharmacies obtain imitations of several drugs from unqualified agents which are then sold to the general public. The Public Relations Officer of the FDA, James Lartey, told Citi News, the influx of these fake drugs is hazardous to the health of Ghanaians. He, thus advised pharmacies to avoid buying cheap drugs from unknown persons because it is highly probable that �they may be buying fake products� which makes them �equally culpable.�
