The Commander of the Ashaiman Divisional Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service, has issued a stern warning to motorists who disregard rules on the motorway and has vowed to prosecute those found culpable. The MTTU has been dispatched to control traffic around the Old Abattoir area where the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has created a diversion away from the collapsed bridge for contractors to begin repair works. In an interview with XFM's David Apinga which was broadcasted live on the Xpress Breakfast Show with Kwaku David on Monday 17th March, DSP Afari Gyasi noted that their main challenge is drivers who try to use the 'shoulders' of the road to overtake others in the queue thereby creating congestion. "The side of the road which we normally call the shoulders are not for them to use but they use it and approach us and we have picked up a few of them who will be processed and sent to court," the Commander added. As at the time of filing this report , about five people have been spotted by the police and are expected to be arraigned before court. He advised motorists to exercise patience due to speed humps and speed limits that will be placed at various points of the road when work begins . He says signposts will be placed to help motorists and the police will be on the ground to maintain law and order till the repairs are completed. DSP Afari Gyasi also disclosed that repair works on the bridge are expected to start by tomorrow and will last for about a month. "What we received from last week is that after the casting of the concrete, the curing duration will take a month before we can use it". Drivers from Aflao, Akosombo and Kpong are advised to use the Dodowa road through to Adenta and then to Accra. Those from Tema are also advised to use the Beach road and Spintex road to ease traffic on the motorway.
