Tussle Over Access Routes At University Of Ghana Rages

Despite assurances given by government to settle the loan burden of University of Ghana, authorities there are bent on doing things their own way, with the introduction of stickers to replace the old tolling system. This has created chaos at the entries of the university with some parents complaining bitterly about the new system. The system requires that only cars with the UG sticker can enter the university. The chairman of the parliamentary Select Committee on Education, Mathias Puozaa is calling on the university and parents to find an amicable solution to the current confusion. He asked the public to bear in mind that the university is an institution of learning and should not be used as a thoroughfare. The Vice President of Imani Ghana, Kofi Bentil, said the University of Ghana authorities have the powers backed by law to block any intruder who wants to enter its premises. He said the public is experiencing the problem now because leadership over the years have failed to put up infrastructure, hence the university is now bearing the brunt. The Executive Director of Child's Right International, Bright Appiah, asked the university to give preferential treatment with regard to its sticker policy. He said the students may be affected psychologically when the environment becomes stressful.
