The proposed upgrading of Polytechnics into Technical Universities would uplift Vocational and Technical education in the country, Mr James Gunu Akatsi-North District Chief Executive (DCE) has observed. He was addressing a Civic Day Forum, organized by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), on the role of District Assemblies in promoting quality education, at Ave-Afiadenyigba, in the Volta Region. Mr. Gunu, said the proposed upgrading would enable vocational and technical students to develop their potentials fully and raise public perception of them. �Our education is more tilted towards knowledge improvement than skills development, hence the problem of increasing graduate unemployment in the country�, Mr. Gunu noted. The DCE said the mandate of District Assemblies to promote education would require the collaboration of teachers, parents, students and the communities to achieve positive results. Ms Theodora Nutakor, Volta Regional Director for Women Technical and Vocational Education, said though vocational and technical education is financially rewarding, it has been ignored, with students lacking encouragement and support. She said it was misleading to see vocational-technical education as the preserve of women, adding that, the exclusion of vocational and technical education in the proposed 200 new community secondary schools project was a serious omission. Mr. Jordan Dzikunu, an NCCE Coordinator in the Akatsi South District, asked the people to have interest in the Commission�s programmes to update themselves on national issues. Ave-Afiadenyigba D-A Basic school came first in a quiz competition it contested with four other schools, as part of the Day.
