A Tamale District Court 2 presided over by Augustine Essah, yesterday remanded 32-year-old painter, Salifu Abdulraman, into police custody to reappear on April 28, 2014.
The suspect, arrested in connection with the murder of Mustapha Abdul Rashid a couple of weeks ago at the Aboabo Timber Market, is facing provisional charges of conspiracy to commit crime and murder.
According to the police, the suspect was arrested at his home by a mob and handed over to the Northern Regional Police Command, saying he was part of the unknown assailants who clubbed Mustapha to death.
His murder was allegedly to avenge the death of one Mohammed Nasir, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) activist and member of the Kandahar Boys, who was shot at close range by some unknown mask-wearing assailants at Sagnarigu while going to visit a friend.
He was rushed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital but died later after doctors had removed nine pellets stuffed in his body.
This built up tension in the metropolis, as aggrieved youth believed to be his friends, threatened to treat in equal measure those behind his death, if the security agencies failed to arrest the perpetrators within a given time.
Hours later, reports confirmed that one Mustapha Abdul Rashid, a vulcanizer, was lynched close to the Aboabo Timber Market also by some unknown persons.
Some eyewitnesses claimed he was in possession of a fully loaded AK 47 assault rifle heading towards Aboabo when he was pounced on by some angry residents and lynched.
