For the 34 years that Mr Charles Torkornoo, a 64-year-old pensioner and former Night Editor of the Daily Graphic, and his sweetheart, Anthonia Eyivi Sossou-Torkornoo, a businesswoman, lived as man and wife, little did they know that they would one day make �nonsense� of the vows they took when they were joined in holy matrimony � �Till death do us part�.
Thus, when news got to Mrs Sossou-Torkornoo, who was then out attending to an important family assignment, that her husband, who was recuperating from an illness had died, she was so devastated by the news that she also passed on.
Mr Torkornoo died 30 minutes earlier than his wife on February 3, 2014.
According to a family spokesperson, the children, in consultation with the extended family members, had agreed to play up the unparalleled love that bonded their parents and relatives by putting them to rest in one big grave, lying side by side.
The lovebirds would be buried tomorrow, Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the Roman Catholic Cemetery at Anloga.
It would be preceded by a burial service at the St Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church from 9 a.m.
The spokesperson said the bodies of the couple would be taken from the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital Medical morgue today, Friday, March 28, 2014 and conveyed in one ambulance to their residence at Kasoa in the Central Region, where some rituals would be performed for them.
He said from Kasoa, the bodies would be conveyed to the St Charles Lwanga Roman Catholic Church at Abeka in Accra, where they worshipped before they are sent to Anloga and Keta, where their bodies would lie in state for brief periods, while wake is kept.
He said the coffins for the couple had simple designs, in conformity with what the couple had insisted should be done whenever they passed on.
The Mirror in its February 7, 2014, edition reported the death of the couple.
Some bereaved persons who were at the mortuary when their bodies were brought in, including the mortuary attendants were dumb-founded because they claimed this tragedy was very unusual.
The late Mr Torkornoo was employed by the then Graphic Corporation on December 1, 1974 and retired on April 21, 2009 after 35 years service.
He was one-time the Assistant Production Editor, Assistant Head of Special Projects, Assistant Sub Desk Editor, among others.
