Afari-Gyan Faces Parliament Today

CHAIRMAN OF the Electoral Commission, Dr. Kwadwo Afar- Gyan is expected to brief Members of Parliament today on preparations towards the conduct of the pending District Assembly elections. Some weeks ago, there were reports that the Electoral Commission had postponed the District Assembly elections due to lack of funds. But government in a statement said the Ministry of Finance had released GHC 55,455,377.83 to the Electoral Commission for the conduct of the 2014 District Assembly Elections. The amount released was in respect of the EC�s request to procure biometric machines, update, maintain and support data centres� hardware and software and the maintenance of wide area network. According to the 1994 District Assembly Elections Act 473, �elections to a district assembly shall be held every four years, except that the elections shall be held at least six months away from parliamentary elections.� After the brief, Parliament is expected to adjourn sine die on Tuesday April 1, 2014 after they were forced to extend the original adjournment date on Friday March 28, 2014 due to some pressing issues. After ten weeks of sittings, Members of Parliament will take a break to visit their constituents and interact with them. The House is also expected to consider the trademarks (amendment) bill, 2013 and the Excise Duty bill, 2013.
