After President John Mahama had made public of how certain figures within his government wanted him to sack the otherwise hardworking Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, many felt that those pushing the pull him-down agenda would shelve it. But that has not been the case, as the detractors of Mr. Seth Terkper are pulling all strings to see off his back. This time round some powerful National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament are teaming up with their colleagues on the Minority side to go after Mr. Terkper. The Enquirer, without any fear of contradiction, has it that a meeting to push that agenda was held last week. In fact, it is the agenda of the gang to haul the minister before parliament on very trivial issues just to make him unpopular. A New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP told The Enquirer of how he was approached by some powerful NDC MPs for that agenda. President Mahama not long ago made it public that some members of his government wanted him to fire Mr. Terkper. Since the President went public with the revelation, there have been series of attacks on the minister, all geared towards making him unpopular. Sometimes last year, a group within the NDC called for the ministers ousters� but their call went unheeded. Mr. Terkper�s crime is that he is working according to the dictates of the President. Most of his colleagues ministers are uncomfortable with his fiat on the award of new contracts. Reports within the corridors of power indicate that the finance minister is very meticulous and always insists on the right thing being done. The situation, according to certain key members of government, has made Mr. Terkper an enemy in his own house. Not long ago, The Enquirer blew the lid off about how some ministers wanted to create public disaffection for him because he would not kowtow to their whims and caprices. Within the finance ministry too, some officials allergic to change are not happy with how he has managed to streamline things. Crook civil servants are also not happy with the minister because he is effectively blocking holes they were using to undertake shady deals. The introduction of the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) has virtually brought an end to most of the dirty ways of making money from government coffers. Meanwhile, a presidential staffer has told The Enquirer that the Presidency is fully aware of the machinations of the powerful NDC MPs against the finance minister. According to the presidential staffer, it was unfortunate for the MPs, who should know better to behave that way. He told The Enquirer that it was his hope that the minister would not succumb to pressure from his detractors and lose track.
