TWO SUSPECTED armed robbers allegedly using motorbike to rob residents of Tema and its environs in the Greater Accra Region, were yesterday arrested by the Tema Police. The suspects, Mohammed Armed, 31-year-old motor mechanic who resides at Dome in Accra and Emmanuel Ahiagbedzi, 23, who lives in Accra New-Town but hails from Aflao in the Volta Region, allegedly took various sums of money from their victims in broad daylight. They were said to have robbed two people at gunpoint at the Tema Community 1 branch of Ecobank and the Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) at Meridian, Tema, after cashing their monies from the banks. Police retrieved from the suspects a foreign pistol, an amount of GH�2,605.00, a talisman, a bunch of keys and a Nokia mobile phone, all found in a lady�s handbag they were carrying. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Beatrice Zakpa Van-Sankiri, Tema Regional Police Commander, told Daily Guide that the incident occurred yesterday, April 1, 2014 at about 3:00 pm. According to her, the Community 1 Police patrol team, which was heading towards the Tema Regional Police Headquarters, received information about the robbery after one of the victims who had withdrawn money from the bank, had raised the alarm. She said the robbers were pursued and the patrol team driver, realizing that the robbers might escape, smashed the unregistered Honda motorbike they were using at the time of the criminal activities and they fell on the ground as a result. The Tema Police Chief explained that the suspects, after falling from the motorbike, took to their heels but they were chased by some residents and were apprehended around the Tema Community 3 traffic light, heading towards the beach road and brought to the Tema Regional Command for further interrogation. She assured the residents of Tema that her outfit was doing everything possible to rid the metropolis of miscreants and to make Tema an uncomfortable place for criminals. DCOP Sankiri commended the public for their timely information leading to the arrest of the criminals and urged them to continue to furnish the police with information. She charged security officers manning various banks in Tema to be extra vigilant at post and give timely tip-off to the police so that suspected criminals could be arrested and made to face the law.
