Trader Jailed For Slashing Farmer

Peter Kwame Owusu, a trader, charged with causing unlawful harm, was on Wednesday sentenced to two years imprisonment in hard labour, by a circuit court at Akim Swedru in the Eastern Region. The 32-year-old convict admitted the offence for biting the right breast, thigh and inflicting deep cutlass wounds on the skull of Mr Issah Salifu, a farmer. Prosecuting, Police Inspector Richard Sabbah told the court presided over by Mr Yaw Atta Sampong that Owusu and Mr Salifu were friends who live at Akim Aduasa in the Birim South District. He said Owusu told Mr Salifu that he wanted to set fire to his fathers farm, so he bought petrol and hid it in the complainants house, but the complainant hid the petrol in order to avert disaster. Inspector Sabbah said this degenerated into a misunderstanding between the two friends and at about 0530 hours on March 13, when the complainant was returning from the mosque, he spotted Owusu following him with a cutlass. He said Mr Salifu ran to his house, but Owusu chased and attacked him. Mr Salifu however managed to overpower the convict and reported the matter to the police.
