5 Arrested For Looting Houses

Five persons including a second-year student of the Accra Polytechnic have been arrested by the Adenta Police for breaking into some houses at Lake Side Estate, and stealing assorted items including household appliances. The suspects allegedly broke into the houses of the victims while they were away and stole items including television sets, DVD players, rice cookers, and water pumps among others. They are David Mork, a 23-year-old second-year student of the Accra Polytechnic, Fraizer Mamud, 28, William Agbemabiase, 23, Joshua Adokor, 20, and Daniel Taffah, 32, taxi driver. The buyer of the stolen items, Osei Bonsu, was also apprehended by the police upon a tip off. Briefing the media, DSP Stephen Ahiatafu, the Adenta District Police Commander, said the Adenta Police received several complaints of break-ins within the Lake Side Estate area this year. As a result, the police beefed up security within the area to protect residents. On April 3, 2014, the five suspects went to the area to loot another house whose occupants had left for work that morning. Upon reaching the area, Daniel Taffa, the taxi driver in charge of a Nissan Almera with registration number GE5156-11, parked at a vantage point, and together with Joshua Odokor, they surveyed the area while David Mork, William Agbemabiase and Fraizer Mamud scaled the wall into the house. A neighbour who spotted them shouted for help. By then, Fraizer Mamud, who had entered the house earlier, had started parking some of the household appliances out. The three, upon hearing the neigbour shout for help, abandoned the wares and hurriedly joined the two in the waiting taxi to escape. However, a motor rider gave the suspects a hot chase and managed to cross the taxi cab meters away from the house. A police patrol team then patrolling the area was called to assist in apprehending the suspects. But sensing danger, four of the suspects abandoned the taxi, leaving Daniel Taffah, the driver. David Mork, while escaping, mistakenly took the mobile phone of suspect Taffah. Through the girlfriend of David Mork, he was apprehended together with the other accomplices. The five confessed to the act in their caution statements and consequently led the police to apprehend the receiver of the stolen items. Some of the stolen items including household appliances were retrieved by the police. The cutter and screw driver which suspects used to break into locked apartments were also recovered by the police. The suspects will be sent to court after investigations, the police said.
